The hit and miss nature of ‘the tribute album’ has caused me to grow weary in this over-saturated market of music compilations. Don’t even get me started on those lousy tribute CDs given away with the UK music press. I swear to god that regardless of what year it is, Q or Mojo seem to give away a disc of sorts to celebrate the anniversary of Revolver or Sgt. Pepper, full of generally dismal performances of normally brilliant songs.

So when I first heard about Make Some Noise (or Instant Karma, depending what side of the pond you’re from) a compilation of John Lennon covers orgainsed by Amnesty International to raise awareness of the crisis in Darfur, I immediately set out to ignore it the best I could. That was until I checked out the track list and realised that for every woeful Avril Lavinge and Black Eyed Peas effort on the album, there was a Regina Spektor or Flaming Lips number to even the score.

I actually prefer Spektor’s take on “Real Love” compared to the re-imaged Beatles’ cut that was released in 1996 as part of the Anthology series. Its bare bones approach does the song much more justice and is sonically much closer to the superior Lennon demo found on the Imagine soundtrack. If you like what you hear, make sure you pick up the record as proceeds go towards a very worthy cause.

Regina Spektor – Real Love.mp3
The Flaming Lips – (Just Like) Starting Over.mp3
The Postal Service – Grow Old With Me.mp3
Jakob Dylan (feat. Dhani Harrison) – Gimme Some Truth.mp3
